Data Validator Position at Virginia Department of Health

VDH’s Division of Surveillance and Investigation is seeking assistance with a data validation project to evaluate the completeness of electronic data transmissions submitted by hospitals and laboratories. One data validator will be hired through a temp agency to assist with the project. Work will be performed at VDH offices at 109 Governor St. in downtown Richmond.

Activities: Validate the content and format of electronic laboratory reports (ELRs) to ensure accuracy and completeness. Compare the format of ELR messages against published national and state standards to identify discrepancies and evaluate quality. Investigate discrepancies to determine their source and propose a valid resolution. Verify conclusions with VDH subject matter experts. Clearly and accurately document findings. Communicate effectively with public health partners to clarify issues while encouraging collaboration and enhancing relationships between VDH and its partners.

Background and Skills: Knowledge of health sciences. Attention to detail. Skilled in the use of databases and spreadsheets, including experience with MS Office's Excel. Ability to plan and follow data evaluation strategies, perform data evaluation and analysis, summarize findings, recommend strategies to resolve systematic data discrepancies, and communicate technical information. College degree with major in microbiology, epidemiology, biology, statistics, social sciences or a related field and/or equivalent experience and training. Prefer training in laboratory science, public health or a related field. Experience with the following is helpful, but not expected: laboratory, communicable disease and other medical terminology; familiarity with HL7 messaging; and with LOINC and SNOMED coding systems.

Experience that will be Gained: The participant will learn about public health epidemiology, surveillance and informatics and will become familiar with HL7 message structure and content and the use of LOINC, SNOMED and other structured vocabularies.

Pay: $21.36/hour

Time Commitment: 20-30 hours/week, potential for additional hours. Ideal candidate would be able to work 6 -12 months, longer if needed.
